Jill's Journey

Hopping her way towards a (hopefully) cancer free life three legs at a time

Happy 2-Week Ampuversary Jill!

Filed under: Uncategorized — rica55 at 9:10 pm on Wednesday, December 26, 2012

Today is 2 weeks since Jill’s amputation!  I can’t believe how time flies!  Today was also my first day back at work since the surgery and my, did I have some separation anxiety!

We celebrated by going out in the snow for a trip to the vet to have her stitches removed…I was not pleased about this, because I don’t know how many of you know how hard it is to get a cab in NYC in the snow, but it’s not pleasant!  And poor little Jilly is now missing 1/4 of her fur!  I didn’t want her to freeze….so I packed up her carrier with her new snuggly blanket and packed her in tightly and off we went.  She was all snuggled up under the covers, I felt so bad having to do this to her:

Everyone was so happy to see her and watch her hop around like a pro – nothing makes Mama prouder!  They pass her around at the vet for hugs and she starts licking all their faces 🙂  Doc says everything looks great, the incision is healing wonderfully.  She still has a little bit of fluid, but it’s gone down a lot and we should give it another week or so.  If it’s not all gone by then, I should give them a ring.  Other than that, she looks great and I can call the oncologist to make an appointment for our consult.

So.  One hurdle, check!….onto the next….

The oncologist unfortunately does not have an appointment available until January 8th which really disappointments me, I would really like to go ASAP and ZAP whatever cancer might be left in her out!  I guess I will just have to be patient though…

I am amazed at what a trooper my little kitty has been through all of this.  I know we are all proud pawrents, but I really think she is handling this the best any little animal could.  Nothing seems to faze her.  The only time she really seems to stumble is when she’s just woken up, but other than that, she’s steady on her feet.  It’s funny to see the new positions she finds herself comfortable in.  She seems to be comfortable “sitting” against me, which she never did before with her two little front feet on me:

JACK ON THE OTHER HAND….poor guy.  I had suspected Jill was having some problems pooping in the litter box, because I had found some poop directly next to the litter box a few times.  HOWEVER, two nights ago, I caught him in the act!  I suspect it is because he does not like the litter I am currently using (it’s paper litter that the vet recommended while Jill’s scar heals).  Hopefully once I can go back to the old litter, he will be ok!  JEESH, can’t you give your mom a break lil guy???

Here are two pics of her incision from today, one before the stitches came out and one after.  I must say I am so pleased with how great it looks!

And here are two videos of her hopping around the apartment for you to enjoy 🙂

Well I think that’s it for now!

Erica & Jill

How fantastic! Jill is hopping around so well, and Freya is getting around in pretty much the same way. It’s an incredible feeling isn’t it to see them move – one the one hand you feel all “oh no, my poor baby” and on the other it’s “way to go!!”.

I like the stairs to the bed and am wondering about how to go about that from my end. Did you make them or get them from somewhere? Freya can hop onto the couch in one go but she will definitely need help getting up to the bed. I did notice Jill completely ignores the stairs in the way down LOL.

Best of luck with the upcoming specialist!!

Hi! I got the stairs from a local petstore – they are supposed to be for dogs, but I figured they’d work for this situation as well :). Yep, she has no trouble jumping down, just UP!

Hi. Thanks for your posting about your adorable kitty – Jill. My Dixie looks similar to her. She had her back leg removed last Thursday and is doing great so far. I was wondering how you know that Jill needs oncology? Dixie had cancer in her leg – and am now hoping its all gone…..THX virginia

Hi! So glad to hear Dixie is doing well! If you go back and read my first post, it details Jill’s “cancer journey”. She first presented with a tumor on her toe back in June (osteosarcoma) and they amputated her toe and we thought we got it all, however, a new lump just appeared six months later. This is why our vet thinks she needs to go to the oncologist. What type of cancer does your Dixie have?

Hi there! I noticed my blog had a referral from tripawds.com, and being Lexi’s mom I just HAD to check out the site! I noticed it was for dogs but quickly found the cat area where you posted a link to my blog, and traced that back to your posts about Jill. I am SO glad I did!!

I’ve been dying to know how your little fam fared and Jill looks SO GOOD!! I am so happy it’s all going so well! Sounds like her experience on painkillers is/was identical to Lexi’s. And it sounds like she’s going to be as equally adorable with that one little back leg!!!

I’m so happy I found this and so glad it’s going well. She’s completely adorable. I can’t wait to hear how the rest of her journey goes. 🙂

Hi! Yes I hope you don’t mind tripawds asked me to give them some useful websites since they have so little information on kitty tripawds out there and I just had to give them your blog bc it was such a comfort to me! Jill is doing so great! It’s amazing how well they cope. Unfortunately she will have to have a few rounds of chemo to make sure we zap all the cancer out but according to my vet kitties handle chemo very well. Fingers crossed! Thank you again sooooo much to you and Lexi. You have no idea how much you helped get me through this process! Big hugs to Lexi from Jill!

Thank you so much for helping other tripawd kitties out there. Fang and I are rooting for you both! Keep keeping us updated!

*Hugs for you both!*
